David Magnusson in the Wall Street Journal
The point of David Magnusson’s 10 portraits isn’t immediately apparent. They are medium-format pictures of young girls, mostly in their early teens, with their fathers; the men wear suits or tuxedos, and in one case a Marine dress uniform, and the girls wear ball gowns. The subjects are photographed outdoors against Southern or Western backdrops, and the prints are rendered in pale, pastel tones. Mr. Magnusson, a Swede, was fascinated when he came to America in 2011 by Purity Balls, formal rituals at which the girls pledge before an audience to remain virgins until they are married.
